in my lfs they have a fully grown claris and a fully grown rtc living happily together in a 8ft tank has anyone kept this pair im thingking of adding a large claris to my tank which has a 16inch rtc

no such thing as a fully grown RTC they grow for life but most people here consider a fully grown RTC to be around the 4ft mark... 8ft tank ... is that 8ft wide? and 12-16ft long? LOL poor fish can't be comfortable in that tank. Not that there hasn't been people do it. We've got to see a pic of this if you can pull it off 
Since your talking about a fish that is going to max out at way less than 18"... I'm sayin it's gonna be lunch quick for the RTC
Are you sure your talking about a South American RedTailed Catfish... or an Asian Red tail? which is smaller but still larger and would eat the Claris anyway so... Not a good idea to mix the two unless your looking for an expensive meal for the RTC

The c,larias will work with the RFTC providing it was given a serious size advantage. However, this arrangement wouldnt last long as a clarias is just like a thick noodle for the RTC to guzzle down.
