I just got some clay pots to put in my tank and was wondering if there is a good way to go about putting holes in them to make them caves. I don't want to just hit it and shatter it instead of putting in a hole. Or is that just what i have to do and its kind of a trial and error sort of thing?

I sell brick, clay flues, clay flues your not suppose to drill, if you want a cave go to a brick yard, they mustly all sell them a flu for an 8" by 2 feed should only be like 22 bucks. We have wine flues, there 6.99 i have them in my tanks

Are the pots glazed or not?

Either way, I've had great sucess with the 'roto-zip' tile blade/drill in a dremel or zip tool...I've even used them in an electric drill (slow).

Using a tile cutting holesaw I had mixed results broke a few made a few nice neat holes.
With a bench grinder roughed out a hole outline most of the way through snapped the piece out with a plier, fast and messy but didnt break any

I just use whole pots, I just buy the appropriate size for the fish.

Dremel it,mid speed, while applying water like when your cutting stone,or CNC.The water will keep the fragile terra -cotta from shattering. [FONT]

I can't see why that wouldn't work, clay is not too different than sandstone, which is easily cut into.

Water and a dremel tool don't mix well, and the zip blades are made to work without water.

When the clay is fired with a glaze it's alot harder then sandstone.
