CLAY POTS?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had trouble with this, too. I was trying to make a door in the rim, though. What worked was etching a deep line with a cutting tool, then wrapping a hammer in a towel to break the piece I'd outlined out. On the bottom, though, you're probably better off with a gentle series of drill holes. Probably about an inch apart, depending on how thick the pot is. Drill wet. Then etch deeply from hole to hole and break out the middle.

You might be able to get away with attacking from the side instead of the bottom. You'd probably encounter little difficulty grinding the corner/bottom rim off. Then you could get away with using a rotary grinder or belt sander, etc. Still do a wet grind.

I'd use a dremel hand held motor tool. Diamond disc blade.

Same here just go slow and it will come out great. Dremel's are just about the best tool ever made for an MFK that likes to take on DIY projects!

interesting... i didnt realize those would work... i thought it only works on tiles or concrete... thanks for the tip!

does that work on a drill?
Yes I use an 18vt lithium Ion Ryobi variable speed on slow speed...

That is what it's meant for...

You'd have a hell of a time trying to spin it fast enough by hand.
I must mention they go right through the clay but the speed is as slow as you can go so the diamond bites through the fired clay... I have done it by hand on a smaller pot and a smaller drill bit...:D

you're welcome...they are designed to go through glass and tiles/clay/marble are just as easy...go slow and do it with water spray bottle

i have the same problem and will try the diamond hole saw... thanks!
welcome...be sure to use a bit of water to cool the holesaw and irrigate the diamond edge...clean abrasives cut better than clogged ones...
