got sick of the noise from my HOB's so today I will be buying a used fluval 304 I found locally. It is actually the same seller that I bought an aquaclear 70 off lately. He used both of these for salt water but my set-up is fresh water. He had the aquaclear 70 already cleaned with bleach etc so I just rinsed it all out set it up and didn't have a problem.

He informed me that the 304 is yet to be cleaned out, therefore still having traces of the saltwater set-up. He doesn't really have the time to clean this out at the moment so I'm going to clean it out myself. I've never had to do this for a canister filter especially from salt to fresh so need some suggestions on steps to take to completely clean this filter so it is fine for my fish.

My tank is still in the cycling process at the moment with some cycling fish in there. My actual stock will not be added until over a week from now but I would like to get the canister set up asap so I can actually get some sleep (HOB's running loud in my room)

Thanks in advance!

Wash everything out with tap water.
Set canister up to filter a bucket with 75% Distilled White Vinegar / 25% Tap.
Let it filter for an hour or two, rinse everything out with tap again.
Let air dry for a day.

That's how I cleaned my used 305 from a garage sale. Runs perfectly. Don't forget to make sure the impeller is okay as well.

what should I look for to do with the impeller when i purchase the canister?

I got the canister filter and have it taken apart ready to clean .. but wondering what other options I have. Dont have alot of vinegar on hand. not that much at least. but I may have some bleach here. anyone able to explain this method or other methods to me?

Just make sure the canister works.
Wipe down the parts with a wet cloth, just make sure they look as clean as possible.

Idk about your location, but in Southern California, Vinegar is $2.25/gal at supermarkets.

ya it is cheap I was just hoping to have it done last night before I tried to go to sleep (this was after 10pm here and supermarkets were all closed). now it doesn't really matter much but I know there is probably a decent bit of bleach at the house if someone can tell me about that method of cleaning?
