anyone know how to clean an eheim canister pro 2 - mine is in kind of cramped quarters under my 125g and i just unplugged it and it started leaking all over the place - a decent amount of water - plug it back in and it works and stops leaking... do i have to take the intake out of the water while it is still running to emty the canister first????

Where is it leaking from? If it's from the hoses, close them first. If it's from the canister it should only be a little bit.

what do you mean close them first? i think they are drip proof - seems to be leaking where the top motor fits on the actualy canister - was a decent amount of water - had it sitting in a lasgna tray and it over flowed that easily

Step one, close the valves. Step two unplug the filter. Step three, remove valve stems. Step four, take to tub, clean and run in reverse.

not sure what you mean by th valves - my wet/dry has them on the tubing - not my filter...

The wet/dry eheim's are not pro 2 models. You asked how to do it with a pro 2 eheim, which would be by the above instructions.

When you unplug the filter without closing the valve it causes to much pressure in the canister and it leaks from the head gasket. You need to close the valve on top by pulling it all the way forward until it clicks and then pull the plug. The head gasket seal gets hard after about two years and will leak. When you reconnect the filter make sure to plug it in about the same time the canister fills or it will leak again.

so in theory if i pull the tube from the head gasket while the filter is running it shouldnt leak?

If this is the Eheim 2128 I saw in your other posts, there is a lever that is used to shut off the water to the pump & disconnect the two hoses from the filter head after unplugging the electrical cord. If all else fails, you can look for the owners' manual that came with it (unless you bought it used).

This is very simple......
1.Close the flow to the tank with the lever on top of the filter pull towards you.
2.Unplug the filter
3.Push the small red tab on top of the canister and then remove the double tap connector from the canister and remove canister.
