Sooo, a guy I work with was telling me about how he uses sand from the beach in all his tanks... He said that he just spread it out over a tarp in his driveway and lets the sun dry it and then rinses it out and puts it in his tanks... Can I do something like this? Or is this b/s?

I'd call it ignorance (lack of knowledge).
Rinse the sand with hot water while it's still wet to remove as many contaminates / pollutants as possible (oils, fertilizers & chemicals).
I don't suggest this sand for anything but marine fishes, there are a lot of sharp objects in it that F/W fishes aren't used to.
If dead set on using it, get it from water at least 2ft deep and only take off the top 4".
