Im sure this question has been asked but i can't seem to find it on the site.

I have recently "revamped" my sump and changed a couple of things around like taking out all the carbon and replacing it with more ceramic rings (i have about 4kg in now with scrubby s and bio-balls) i have the rings at the last stage of my sump after the bio-balls, scrubby s lots of filter floss and sponge @ the start so the water that reaches them are basically clear from all debris.

My question is will i have to clean the rings or will it be ok to leave them alone as i have never cleaned any of my rings or balls and i feel that it is better to leave them alone and not disturb them.

Thanks

Don't clean them!

bacteria need to settle on the ceramic rings so some gunk built up is essential. If they become clogged up just rinse in tank water when you are doing a water change.

BTW, I would replace the ceramic rings with sintered glass. Much bigger surface area for the bacteria to setlle and hence a better biological filtration. Sera Siporax is the best stuff on the market IMO. Quite expensive but worth every penny
