I have two Eheims 2217's on my tank, how often should I clean them? They say dont use tap water as it kills the good stuff, but if I have two wont the other one compensate and not put the tank into a cycle? It's just easier to clean one completly with tap then to use tank water, know what I mean?

"they" are right dont ever use tap water to clean your bio media, this could be ceramic media or sponges if you dont use ceramic media. rinse in old tank water when you do a water change. if you have ceramic media then rinse in tank water and clean the sponges in tap water.
you are right though it would be easier to clean with tap water but easier isnt always best in this hobby.
if you use tap water your killing off half of your bio filtering capacity.
i run 2 filters like you and i clean them at least 1 month apart so any bacteria can grow just in case ive somehow messed up. the time is purely a preventative measure so my tank doesnt crash and not because i use tap water.

Bump. also anu luck using purigen?

I have atleast 2 filters on eack of my tanks and i only clean them 1 at a time. Use tank water while doing a water change or you can treat some tap water and use that, so you dont kill off your bb. Short cuts in this hobby can lead to disaster. Dont end up in the lessons learned forum with this one.

I clean mine when the flow rate drops. Thats 1-2 x/year
