So I found a couple nice pieces of driftwood at the local lake. They were laying on the bank dried out so I would assume there would not be any aquatic parasites but just to be safe let me know if this is enough safety measures...

First I took the garden hose to it to remove any loose pieces of wood / dirt. Secondly I filled a rubbermaid container full of very hot tap water, I soaked it over night, drained the water the next day and repeated. I plan on doing that step one more time. Lastly, I will allow it to soak in room temp water for a week or two to remove tanins and allow it to presoak and hopefully semi sink.

Will this be suffice?

It may warp it a bit, but it's not going to melt a hole through it or anything like that.
