Hey.
I have 2x fx5 and 1 x eheim 2080, since its a long time ago, i desided to clean one of my fx5 out, i am going to take them all. I did do it in the shower in tempered water, so i belive that there is alot of bacteria left in there, the bio i didnt clean that much, just showered it a littlebit. What i wonder about is for how long should i wait til i take the next filter? I gues the filter i cleaned got a little setback, so how much time do it need to come back to normal?

The filters go on a 550 gallon indoor pond with 9x stingrays, 3x scalare, 2x jack dempsey and 6xgeophagus(fullgrown)

I would just get set up on a routine, maybe clean one of the FX5 every month and just clean the eheim as needed. Myself I have 2 FX5s along with a sump on my 450g. every month I clean one of the FX5s however I do open the other one and clean the filter floss in the top tray. Just have to use your better judgment based on how dirty they get in a certain amount of time.

It really depends on the amount of waste you get and how offen you do water changes. I own 5 FX5 and run them on almost all my tanks, I just tore down my 240g to change it up and the pump was running since 12-31-2010 . Pump wasn't that bad and all in all I clean it with my hose outside and never have any problems with it. Good luck!!!!

The one i took looked pretty bad, so i surtenly should do it more often(offcourse, its stingrays). What the question really is about, is how long time it normaly would take for it to get back to normal(the cleaned filter). Since you need 3-4 weeks with cykle to get a tank up and running, i think that 2 weeks should be good? Since there already is alot of bacteria obviously in the tank, other filter, and the filter i cleaned.

If your cleaning all your media in a bucket of your aquarium water, very little of the bb should be killed off.

a 20l canister is to big for doing it that way, atleast what mine looked like :p No chance in the sea.. But still, people fill an aquarium with 100% new water, put in a drifted canister, and its already cycled. I dont see the difference betwen that, and washing it in springwater.

I used to clean my filters every 6 months. I just decided to go with every 4 months. So I will be cleaning them this week. But I would say most probably clean them 4-6 months.
