Cleaning filter media

Should I regularly clean my filter media (mainly the filter floss) with each water change or only when flow becomes impeded. My Ammonia and Nitrite is rocksteady at zero. Is the detrius ok as long as the BB is doing their job or is regular cleaning a healthier route. What are your thoughts?

Its just I notice my filters I don't clean seam to do a better job of scrubbing the water and can handle heavier bioload with less of a swing. And i hate cleaning cannister filters. Would you think the detrius maintains a larger BB colony?

My cleaning intervals for canisters are 9-12 months or longer if the flow is still strong. I never rinse filter floss, I just replace it. BB live wherever there's a surface.
