How do I stop the filter and turn it off to open it up to clean, without water coming out all over the place?

Unplug
Close the Valve
disconnect the hose
Carry to your sink and clean it
Then reverse the steps.

with the filter still plugged in, pull the intake out until water stops coming out of the output. and i think theres a little valve of those fluvals. close that. take it to the sink open the valve and dump the water out. maybe im not sure what your asking

i think putting it down locks the hoses in. i havent owned a fluval so im not sure, which ever way closes it which should be down. but before you take it out keep it plugged in and pull the intake out of the water for a few seconds so it lets some of the water from the canister out

Don't do this. On the Fluvial canister filters first turn the black lever upward which closed the valves and seals up the hoses. Unplug. Lift gray lever to disconnect valves from canister. Do NOT remove the intake tube from the aquarium and allow the pump to run dry. Once you're done simply reverse order.

You you really want to see how it is done go to YouTube.

Thanks for the help guys. Got everything situated. Now I just need to get my heaters and T5HO lights so I can throw my fish in the 125.
