cleaning fouled bio matrix

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i kept mine in bags and moved it to a bucket during WC. then run the WC hose into the bucket and shake the bags well to get rid of junk. seemed to work fine when i had my big tank

Agree with the above. but my media isn't in bags either. it is a hassle for me to but Ive got it down to science now. I remove my baskets and use WC water to rince then put back together and throw my can back onto my tank.

mine isn't bagged either, but I have it after 9 inches of poret foam and after 2 years it has no signs of any detritus.

If it's not bagged, you'll probably want to heavily filter the water prior to the matrix or it may get clogged and then it doesn't do it's job efficiently. If it is bagged, there's less need to do that heavy pre-mech filtering, as long as you are willing to do a rinse and cleanse approach periodically. How often depends on bio load and how debris reaches the matrix.

I'm for easy peasy, so heavy pre-mechanical plus being in a bag would be my choice.

Take it out, put it in bags. You'll only have to go through the pain of removing it without it being in bags once. You live and learn...
