Hey everybody,

Just wanted to know how do you clean your fx5?

I usually take it all apart bring the foam pads outside and hose them till they look brand new and the media which is carbon, bio and clearmax under water from the tap.

Someone told me you could just keep using the same media as long as you wash it is that true?

Also what is the best media to put in each chamber any ideas? Not much of a filter expert...kind of the guy that sees "Fluval" labeled stuff and grabs it.

Thanks....pretty sure thier is a post somewhere on media choice but coudn't find one about the procedure of cleaning

Top-Media Basket
Fluval Pre-Filter, and Fluval Clear-Max

Middle Media Basket
Bio-Max, Ammonia Remover

Bottom Media Basket
Bio-Max, and Water Polishing Pad on top

Sounds good, except for the polishing pad, whats your opinion on them? Heard they clog to often

Also are you constanstly replacing or do you clean reuse

Bio max in all 3 trays only add amonia remover when u have a ammonia spike. But the trays full of bio max Works really good. For the polishing pad i put 1 on top of the top tray.clean and reuse a couple times then replace

i was always told NEVER to wash your filter pads and etc under the tap as the chlorine and stuff in our tap water kills all the BB in the pads and such... and you get mini cycles .... i was told to just rinse/clean the sponges and media in old tank water or fresh de-chrolinated water ....

Polish pads should be used for a week maximum if you don't remove after that it will clog the filter totally. I wash all filters in sink with tank temp water. Love the sprayer to get them clean. Never an issue here.

Mine don't clog that fast... but they do need to be changed regularly. Depends on your stock/feeding habits I guess...
