Hey,
Cleaning my tank tonight, in preperation for getting a bristlenosed catfish on sat. Getting him to help keeping my tank cleaner :)

Bored and just written out a little process I will take, please if you could change, delete, add where you think would make it easier or bettter; that would be good.

1. Clean out filter. Empty water from filter, half wash sponges etc, leave some gunk on there to keep the bacteria alive. Replenish the media.
2. Use the gravel cleaner and empty half of the water, grabbing all the crap off the gravel as I am emptying the water.
3. Scrub around the glass getting rid of most the algae etc. Leave some patches etc for the catfish to feed on when he goes in on Saturday.
4. Cut back my plants etc, making it neat and fresh. Clean up plant trimmings that fall into the water/float around the water.
5. Put the filter hoses back into the water; get the filter running/water flowing through the filter again.
6. Fill the tank back up with water. Add 1, at most 2 drops of primer to the tank.
7. Leave it for a few hours whilst the water cycles, checking for problems in the meantime.
8. Give the fish some food to calm them down a little bit/bring their stress down.
9. Add little bit of substrate stuff for the plants.
10. Clean lids etc and tidy everything up.

EDIT: Yes I have cleaned my tank etc before, but not since i got my plants, which then started getting algae/whatever on the glass behind them.

Cheers

Whats primer? Do you mean prime? If so you probably should add a bit more than 1 or 2 drops. You should probably use a full capful depending on the size of your tank.

50gal tank.
Hmmmm I have prime and this aquaclear stuff at home(i dont use the aquaclear, dunno why i bought it). Maybe im mixing the 2 different measurements up. At work atm, memory is failing a little bit ^.^

wow thats a tedious process haha. but good look with the new fish.

haha i know, this kind of cleaning is definitely not a weekly thing! Weekly water changes, every 4 weeks or so i give the filter a bit of a clean out. Hopefully this catfish should eliminate the need to worry about glass etc. Or at least keep it cleaner for longer. For some reason I just feel the need to have everything looking good for the new fish on saturday. That and to finally get some photos.
