My wet dry has a sponge filter after the overflow box I will refer to it as the first sponge; & in the sump before the water gets pumped back into the fish tank there is another sponge filter I will call it the second sponge; witch some how has some type of brown substance floating around in front of it. I know to clean the first sponge filter but is it necessary to clean the second and remove all the brown substance or is all that brown substance beneficial bacteria that I should keep. I have also heard that I could remove the second sponge cause it's not really necessary.... is that true? One more question how does the brown floating substance get stuck inside sump? If it made it throught the first sponge I would think it should pass through the second.

I would keep both prefilter sponges, but clean them in a bucket of tank water, they do have beneficial bacteria, but for the most part they are playing the role of a mechincal filter....
