Cleaning out filter media

I have been cleaning out my filter media on my fluval 205 under tap water for about three years. I haven't had many fish die over these three years but I have just recently heard that filter media MUST be washed under water from the tank?? This would maintain bacteria levels i know, but i have been doing it for years. When I get my 1209L and my two fx5s will i need to wash it under tank water??

depends, I rinse my biological media with tank water. I thuroughly clean my mechanical filter media with hot tap water.
