i wanna try a planted tank for the first time, and one thing i couldnt find is, do you clean the substrate at all? so any fish waste im guessing gets taken care of by the plants or do you just skin the top of the substrate for any loose fish droppings, any links or answers would be great thanks

i never touched the substrate in my planted tank. after a few months when everything was established, there was no waste buildup at all. its a self contained ecosystem

I still vacuumed the top of the sand, just to remove any poo and keep it from rolling around, because it looked gross.

x2 . . . to my mind, it's one of the key benefits of a planted tank.

I just let mine go. Between fish digging around in it, occasional minor rearranging & plant trimming, and the Malaysian Trumpet Snails it never really builds up.
