I just got a used powerhead and filter from a guy that was running it in a saltwater tank. My question is what can I do to get all the old crud, salt, and coraline stuff I think that's what it is called off the equipment so I can use it in a freshwater tank?
If I hit it with a blunt object like the back of a butter knife it pops right off, but I wont be able to get it all off like that. Any help or suggestions?

LOL yeah keep hitting it with blunt objects...

Take it apart as best you can without breaking waterproof seals clean it reassemble it and allow it to run in some freshwater that is not your tank that should work just fine. What kind of filter did he give you ?

I will try the vinegar thing and see how it works.
And ya I dont want to have to hit it and cause something to get damaged, that is the main point of this thread. Ohh and I wasnt hitting it more like tapping it.

the filter is a marineland 200. . the powerhead is a seio 1100m super flow pump. I am gonna hook it up to my undergravel jet system.

Wow the vinegar worked great. Everything basically fell right off after it soaked over night and I rinsed it this morning. Thanks spyder
