I got a used tank, and the clear part of the lid (for the lights) is coated in salt-residue, or at least thats what it looks like. how do I clean it? I tried one of those flat razors, it didn't work very well.

Sounds like lime deposits that etch the glass...try some vinager, or CLR from the grocery store...just make sure to rinse well, as you know...if that doesn't work, glass is cheap, just replace it...

I've just finished cleaning up an old tank, vinegar is amazing for this king of thing, if you can take the glass out soak it and then scrub it off after you've left it

Vinegar for sure. I used it for the 180 I just got. Works like magic. I did replace glass tops for my other tanks. Its worth the $5

Try muraitic acid solution if the vinegar doesn't work. I generally just use that anyway. Soak the glass in a 10% solution for 24 hours. It will come clean.
