I just got a 120 gallon tank and stand for $50 from my neighbor. I'm very happy with the deal I got. :D

She used the tank for saltwater and there are coralines (looks like algae) on the back glass. She said she tried to scrape it off and could not.

Someone suggested that she try muraic (sp?) acid to remove it. I would like to set the tank up ASAP and would rather not use the acid if I can avoid it due to the heavy amount of rinsing I would have to do to make the tank safe for the fish.

Anyone have suggestions on how to remove the coralines without using a strong acid?

try useing find grit sand paper. 1000th grit is what i use. sand paper and water.

Heavy rinsing? Muriatic acid is 20% hydrochloric acid (HCl) and water. As it removes the build up, the HCl is reduced to H2 and CaCl. There is no heavy rinsing involved...unless holding a garden hose is too much manual labor for you.

The acid produces fumes that will make you want to quit. To prevent the fumes, simply mix the acid with any liquid dishwashing soap. Do not use lye based soaps or those with chlorine sanitizers.

Good idea. That's a good alternative to all that heavy rinsing. :grinno:
