I just picked up a 55 gal tank, stand, 2 hob filters, 2 hoods, and a bunch of other stuff that I found on craigslist for $75. It was left in a foreclosed home and the guy just wanted it gone fast.

Well now I am attempting to clean what was a saltwater setup and its not very easy. What can I use to get the crusted salt residue off of the hoods and filters housings? I let them soak in hot water and dish soap but its not been completely successful.

Any ideas?

You can mix vinegar and water together and that will take care of most of it. Tetra makes some aquarium wipes or something that actually work pretty well.

It sounds like you have the left over hard water stains. Those are the toughest to get out. You need to ask your self if it's worth it. If it is? Go with the grocery store lime away stuff you use in your bathroom. You just gota make sure you clean it after you clean it lol or the residual could poison your fish.

I wouldn't bother unless looks is important to you. Saltwater minerals will not thrive in freshwater :)

Thanks for the tips. The vinegar was just what I needed. I got the filter housing and parts clean enough. I have the lids soaking now and then its time to clean the tank itself.

it stands for calcium, lime, and rust. it works great

Yeah CLR! that's what I use. Use rubber gloves the stuff is strong!
