Does anyone know if those gravel vacuums work on sand as well or will it just suck it up with the rest of the debris? And if they do, what's the best way to clean sand?

they suck up sand.
i just hover over the sand as most waste just stays on top of the sand and does not mix like it does with gravel.

they will just suck up the sand, the best thing to do is mix up all the sand with your hand first and then stick just a piece of tube or something into the water all around. Thats what i do at the petstore i work at and it's always worked great

I do as dixon says i let the vacumn hover slightly over the sand. This would be enough to get the debris on top of it.

I usually just hover over the sand, but my tank hasn't been clear in months so I figured it must be in the sand. They water quality is fine...for the most part (haven't gotten a kit to check ammonia). I've used Clarity by Seachem, but it's still seems cloudy.

I go over the sand as well, but i have too much in my tank so sometimes i let it siphon some out. (not down the drain obviously)

You can also restrict the water flow to lessen the ammount of sand sucked up. just pinch the hose a bit.
