I read the sticky on substrate and searched the forums but I still have a question. I would like to eventually try sand in one of my tanks, but how do you clean the tank. I am used to a gravel vac is there a way to clean it without losing all your sand? I do weekly water changes so I'm not worried about gas pockets but I would need to have it more than a half inch thick. Has anyone had any problems with thicker sand? Thanks for any suggestions!

I have around 4" of sand in my 150. I use a gravel vac to clean it. Mostly, I sort of swirl the vac about an inch off the sand. The swirling stirs up the garbage and the vac siphons it up the tube. Bigger "pieces" (Pleco poop) sometimes require that you get closer and you do lift some sand. But, once you raise the vac, most of the sand trickles back out.

I do see a small amount of sand in my sink when I'm done with the water change. But, maybe a tablespoon of loss is all I see when vac'ing out 50-60 gallons.

It's actually very easy to clean sand :)

Taek care...

+1 fpr stirring up the sand and siphoning out the junk. Seems to work pretty well. I use this on both my fresh and salt tanks
