Cleaning Sand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Use a python and hold it a tad over the sand, and it will suck off the gunk.

Python? u mean a cyf? Lolz or gravel cleaner either way. What i do is but my hand in the water shack it around a little but not too much like very little so the sand does not come up but all the gunk does because they are lighter weight. When i suck with the cyphen it cant suck until i get really close but then i suck up the sand :( Then wen the gunk goes up the filter cleans it up :) works pretty good and eisiest if any1 can suggest a better way i would love to know and pm me plz

I should of made my question more clear, i just bought the sand, and was wondering how clean it so it doesn't cloud up the tank

rinse and rinse and rinse in a bucket, like 50 lbs at a time. keep stirring and dumping out the milky water

depending on type should take anywhere from 10min to 1 hr per 50lbs. playsand is the worst (but cheapest)

I agree.

And, no matter how much I have rinsed sand in the past (as mentioned, playsand was the worse) it still clouded up the water to some degree. Don't get discouraged if your water becomes cloudy after all that rinsing. It will clear up within a week or so.

it's probably not likely that you've got any extra screen or sheet material around? i usually have lots of scrap fine screen&mesh that i use for the courser sands, and just dump it carefully into heaps that spray with a hose. i sift it a bit and spread it out. it speeds up the process, but if you're not careful you can lose it a lot easier than just rinsing in a bucket~
