Cleaning Suggestions For Inside Tube

I was wondering, if anybody has any cleaning suggestions or solutions that will help clean out the mildew inside of the tubes for a Canister filter system? Freshwater setup.

I have this issue, I run two canisters...I use an unfolded coat hanger that has a closed "J" bent into one end, tie a small knot of paper towels around the J knot then pull the coat hanger through the tubes. In most cases I use an old guitar truss rod to "shove" the paper towel end through enough to grasp the free end of the coat hanger. Hey, it's ghetto, but it does a great job! I've seen some people use small pipe snakes, but that's $$$. We go cheap over here.
 
I should comment that my tubes are about 1/2", and that the "knot" of paper towels fits snug and pulls through pretty snug. It's also disgusting what the paper towel device pulls out, be near a sink or outside. SLUDGE. hope this helps!
