Ok, i have a 55g tank that is slightly overstocked. I have 1 Eheim 2217 and 2 AquaClear 70g HOB filters. Cleaning the HOB filters is easy, but i have several issues when cleaning the Eheim.

Here is my problem.......When i remove the filter from the tank and take it apart to clean, for one, its very hard to clean using the old fish water. Also, when i finally do clean it all, when i plug it back in, it dumps a TON of CRAP back into my nice clean tank. No matter how much i clean the filter, always upon startup, it dumps nasty debri back into the tank.

Even if i dont clean the filter, and just unplug it, then plug it back in, it dumps debri back into the tank.

Is there a way around this?? Also, hwo many times can i reuse the Eheim substrate and the coco puff looknig stuff??

Run a small bottle brush through your hoses. You have build up in the pipes that is getting released.

I have no idea what "cocopuff" looking stuff is. Can you do better with a picture or a better description. I suspect you mean bio-media, but I am not sure.

The biological filter material is the only stuff you need to protect from tap water. You can wash the blue sponge in tap water which should be collecting most of the debri. I wash the first layer of ceramic noodles and the blue pad in tap water and have never had a problem. Those first two layers should be taking care of most of the gunk and then you can just dump the biological spheres in a bucket of tank water.

ok, so i can wash the blue pad and the substate with tap water and clean the bio media with tank water. Also, how do i clean the hoses? There at places over 5' long, lol.

When I clean my eheim I put all the bio( coco puffs ) in a bucket filled with tank water. Clean everything else with tap water, especially the blue and white pads. I don't have problems with it releasing crap back into my tank and my hoes are dirty as hell. I don't plan on cleaning my hoes at all. When it gets to dirty I'll just replace it.

I have found that cleaning most canisters with a TANK THAT SIZE YOU WILL NOT HAVE ENOUGH WATER. So when you clean it plan on just cleaning it with fresh clean garden hose water. Do not clean the HOB filters when you clean the canister. That way they will help the reseed process on the Eheim. The great thing about the Eheim media is that you can use it forever. I have never replaced my media and some have been running for 15 years.
