Over winter break my in-school tank was left in the less than capable hands of someone besides Metta and I. The piranhas and other fish turned it into a total mess. What the best method of giving the tank a serious scrub down? The filter media was trashed and new media is being bought, Is activated carbon a no no for planted tanks? also what are some really really hardy plants for this tank and my monster tank =D.
Thanks!

I guess first question would be are the fish going to stay in the tank during cleaning, or are they being moved into another tank...

If they are being moved to another tank, can they stay there a period of time while you empty most of the tank and give it a good scrub before re-setting it up?

I use a credit card on the glass. Do water changes while vacuming up the mulm. 50% WC once a week minimum. Carbon will remove the yellowing from any wood in the tank but it also removes any complex organic molecules. Depending on what your using for plant nutrition this may or may not be effected. If you do weekly WC's then you should be able to do without activated carbon.

We where doing weekly 30 pecent changes, will change to fifty. We removed the fish and drained the water almost completely, scrubbed the walls with clean rags and washed all the structure with warm water, We had activated carbon in the tank( filter) but for now it will be left out. Pics to come.
