Cleaning up my Tetra Whisper Power Filter?

What is the proper way to clean my power filter? The LFS told me that I should clean my filter everyweek and replace the bio-bag that I put carbon in every month. Am I supposed to wash the black sponge (Bio-Foam & Aerobic Frame also?

you shouldnt be cleaning it unless really necessary. only thing you should do is replace the cartidges when needed.

I never wash the black foam (supposedly this is where the bacteria are) and I rinse the cartridge with aquarium water about once every 1-2months or when the filter flow is not as optimal. I replace the cartridge every 4 months or so. I buy my bootleg cartridge from kensfish very cheap
