The excess detrius that sinks to the bottom after it goes through the bioballs ....can that be siphoned out? Will it cause a nitrate spike with either fresh or saltwater tanks? Not touching the bioballs just the excess crap underneath them in the sump........

You can syphon it out. That's what i do.

Where does this stuff come from?

Do you not have enough mechnical filtration in front of the W/D filter?

sometimes the water will splash from the mechanical filtration, or if it somehow floats around....It happens.
I have this problem and just siphon it out every few months before it gets bad. Its never caused a problem for me.
