Does anyone have any experience with the Clear Choice wet/dry filter? On a system like this, water is skimmed from the top. Water should be taken from lower levels of the tank and returned to the top levels. Is there a way to have your intakes at a lower level and still have the system be overflow free if there were a power outage?

I've been thinking about this concept also.

My thought is to set it up like the output, but a shipon break in it. Have the over flow run as deep as you want then drill a small hole in it near the water surface so that when the pump stops it will only drain to this point.

I have not tryed it yet but but most everyone does this with return lines on a sump so it should work.

A sump would be nice to hide the heater etc. Hydor makes a 300 watt inline heater for use with canister systems. Does anyone know if they are any good?

What you are looking for is based off of the DIY overflow that is frequently used by members on this site.

Now, on the system you are referring to.... the water skims from the top and the return line circulates the water from the bottom of the tank to the top. The goal is to keep the substrate free of debris and have the debris floating in the water column to be removed.

How do I find this diy overflow that you are referencing? I have no experience with anything but canisters, so a diagram may be helpful also.

Have a look around the DIY Forum. There are boat loads of threads talking about them, but the stickies at the top of the page are a great starting point.

At what size tank would you suggest using a sump system over canisters, and which do you feel is less maintanance and more worthwhile?
