the following fish were initially taught to me as full fresh fish, but some say they are brackish.

leopard ctenopoma
needlenose gar
silver datnoid.

fresh or brackish?

thank you.

awesome thanks, thats what ive been telling all the customers exactly. why are people constantly able to put leopard ctenopomas in their brackish setups then?

same reason people can keep violet, knight, and bumblebee gobies in FW. Some fish are incredible tolerant to water conditions.

I have seen the needlenose (Xenentodon cancila) listed as brackish quite abit though. From Wikipedia:
Wikipedia said:
Alongside misunderstandings of the natural diet of these fish,[6] there has been confusion over the optimal water conditions required by this species when kept in home aquaria, with the addition of salt to the water often being recommended.[4] In fact these fish do perfectly well in freshwater aquaria.[6]

hmmm. thats a bit odd.
another question: can all brackish fish go salt?
i used to think no until i decided to make a bumblebee goby salt for my friends reef.

I would go with no. Can all Brackish fish be acclimated to salt. maybe if the proper amount of time is taken. Will they live long healthy lives possibly not.

1. Must brackish water fish be kept in brackish water aquaria?
The answer to this depends on the species in question. Some supposedly brackish water fish are really freshwater fish that happen to be tolerant of salt. They can be kept perfectly well in freshwater aquaria. Such species include spiny eels, glassfish, wrestling halfbeaks, and (so long as the water is hard and alkaline) bumblebee gobies. Other species inhabit both brackish waters and the sea, and they can be kept in marine tanks. These include scats, monos, waspfish, green spotted puffers, and lionfish. Only relatively few absolutely must be kept in brackish water, most notably figure-8 puffers, knight gobies, and the orange and green Chromides.

F8 puffers do best at a SG of 1.005.
