I'm thinking of doing a Discus tank in a year or so. I think the wild caught discus are the best looking fish. I don't want wild caught Discus I don't think I'm ready for that. So what tank raised color strain is closest to the wild color?

why don't you think your ready for wild discus? I felt the same way. my tank was originally going to be an angel tank, but after much research and talking with some people I decided on wilds. I am glad I did. don't let them scare you. they are no different than any other fish. get them from a good source and get adults or sub adults. all they require is a little more care as in water changes. now if your thinking about breeding, then it's a bit more complicated. my tank is a show tank and my wilds are happy in 7.6 P.H. good water and the right tankmates and you'll be good to go. you can look at hans discus web site. he has pics of all his fish and some are wild type but tank raised. hope this helps.

They have scared me. I do have one wild caught fish now my true parrot Seen in my avatar . She is from the amazon basin like discus and doing great. So maybe you are right I could do it. Thanks.

wilds fish need softer water than any bred in the US or Europe. Stendeker fish which I believe are available in the US have Tefe and Alenquer strains available. I would still go for wilds. Just keep them in soft water with a pH around 6.5 and be patient. They might not feed for some time but don't start throwing medications at them.

thanks the Tefe Discus are what I would be looking for thanks.

wilds need soft water if your planning on breeding. I have 8 wild greens in 7.6 and they are fine. take a peek at simplydiscus.com. many are keeping wilds in p.h. as high as 8.5. better to have stable high ph than trying to match it to your fish.
