Ok here goes. 210 with fx5 and sump. Sump is run with mag 18. 20 liters of pond matrix, 7 liters of ehiem subrate media, about 10 gallons of bio balls split between fx5 and sump. I have a koralia 4 as circulation in my tank. My tank is bare bottom. 50% water changes weekly. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 6.8 ph, and 40 nitrate.

So my dats always had somewhat of a cloudy eye when it was in the 155 with gravel bottom. Now my basses flagtail and others are getting it too since my 210 got set up. Is this due to bare bottom? Please help. When I had the 155 set up I had 2 ac 110 and 2 rena xp3. All filled with ehiem substrate mix. Again other fishes had no cloudy eye then.

For reference they look like this but without the whiteball in the middle. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=286698
My stock list you can find here http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=312174&highlight=210

Am I trippin? Or is it normal?

So are you saying that 2 ac110 and 2 xp3 is better filtration than a sump and fx5?

Not at all, what im saying is there was something besides the bare bottom that caused the cloudy eye..
Could be many things, but not the fact that your tank has a bare bottom..

It is strange to me. I feel that I have better filtration in the 210 than the 155. Yet the eyes are getting cloudy. Same feeding routine and water changes too. Also have more water for pollution dillution.

There is something about substrate, deep bed in particular, that adds to the stability and health of an aquarium. I find that about 3 months after I set up a new tank (with substrate) everything starts to really clear up and the fish become more active. I can only guess it has something to do with a different kind of bacteria growth within the substrate.

I cannot guarantee that adding substrate to your tank will improve the situation with your Dat's eyes after three months; but it is something to think about.

I am thinking about fine gravel or pool filter sand. I love the look of sand but don't like cleaning it. Bare bottom is soo easy. I never vac just change the water.
