i have 2 tanks that turned a cloudy white... turtle tank a 45gallon half full with a colored gravel substate. 11 red eared sliders about 1-2" and about 10 small rosy reds. i am useing an internal filter rated for 10-20 gallons. the water cleared alittle after a 50% water change.

but the other tank is a 47 hex with a aqua clear 50 on it with sand substate 1 blue gourami, 1 2.5-3" oscar and a 3.5-4" irredecent shark. i did a 30% water change and its still cloudy.

my buddy has a 75 gallon tank the same way.. white cloudy. he did many water changes. then decided to do big water changes like 80%, twice. now he is getting a fish smell like dead fish on the river.. i dont know his tank well but he has many small red devils and a few others.. gravel substrate.

all tanks have been running for some time now with out problems, till now..

U might be goin thru a bacterial bloom like I am.
My tank has been set up recently and I used an old filter from
another tank and still have cloudy water. Its believe that
I have nutrient-rich water that is causing a mutiplication
of bacteria.

I just ordered a product call Algone from BigAl's and am gonna
try it for the 1st time.

I've been changing 20-30% of my water every other day for 3 weeks
and still have the cloudiness. They say I have to be patient with the
water changes and time will solve the cloudiness. In the
mean time, I'm gonna try Algone.

Check out their website: algone.com

It certainly sounds bacterial in nature. Do you have other tanks to steal bacteria from? There are several types of dried bacteria you can buy. You would be looking for bacteria to consume amonia, and nitrites.

i agree with tony even tho iam new i just found this forum but have many of fish tank (6) ,get yourself sum bacteria and u should be fine goodluck,,

dead fish smell or egg smell is usally from the nitrates in a ebstablished tank converting to nitrogen gas this happens when nitrate is deprived of o2 if you have a place in your substrate that air can be trapped this cycle will take place rocks piled up are a good area to look at, if water cant flow through it also make sure your gravel is mixed up with weekly vacuming sometimes this is even visual a white film like substance covering or creaping out of stagnet areas hence the milk water higher flow rates from a power head or filters helps also good luck ....

forgot to add this your tanks are both overpopulated and under filtered the first one i would remove at least 8 of the sliders and add some more filtration the 47 is going to cause you a lot of problems the oscar will outgrow it within a year the irrdecent shark although slow growing will reach 4 feet in length and the filtration is inadeqate both are messy sorry to get down on you but its better to deal with it know for the sake of the fish....... I try to filter 4 times the volume of the tank per hour on a moderately stocked tank, it is easier to prevent a bloom than to correct one.
