we got this oscar who I talked about in a previous thread titled " I think my oscar is retarded " or something like that.

he is retarded. I think he's been swimming back and forth in the 55 gallon tank while rubbing his eyes on the side, or he has a fungus?

There are cloudy white spots in the center of his eyes and when I see a profile of the eye you can see that it is sticking out, the profile of his eye isn't perfectly round...

what is it?

oscars always have bug eyes look up popeye and see if that is what you are looking at. the cloudiness what are your water perameters? any time you have a health question, its what you list to avoid wait on help perameters and a pic if possible. the help will flow till you are good!

yea I've been keeping his water below 80 ppm nitrate according to a 5 in 1 test strip, changing water 33% every 5 days. nitrate is usually around 20 and 40.

general hardness is 150 ppm and alkalinity is always 300 ppm, wisconsin water. PH brought down from 8's to mid 7's recently, over the course of about 2 weeks. I didn't know that hard water was such a foreign thing to this species and the softer spigot water + acid lowered PH seems to be doing his attitude well. I just worry about the rub marks on his eyes. it looks like he was doing laps for a couple hours while pounding his eye on the glass, which he's fond of.

maybe it's a fungus though or something?

tank is 55 gals, oscar is going on 9 inches, and 33% water changes every 5 days or so, to keep nitrates below 80 ppm, which he seems to love.

:nilly:

is he retarded by pounding his eyes into the glass while doing laps or is this a fungus or something, why does this oscar have white blotches on his eyes?

Sounds like hes either blind, popeye,or oh my gosh! this is really weird. how often do you feed?

You need to keep the nitrates below 20.. you need to get it down.. do more water changes

Yup, when my oscar was in a 54 gallon, he needed 30-60% water changes two-three times a week to keep those nitrates down. Granted he was 12"+ but still, more water changes! lol

Nitrates under 20 is ideal, keep em under 50 and you have nothing to worry about. Id add aquarium salt and turn the heat up a bit to keep stress down to help his eye out. Large water changes as well.

Yea he's growing out of the 55 gallon, like I say, he's around 8 or 9 inches and as you all know that means he's brand new.

anyway, the cloudy marks went away today and I think he learned what happens when he does laps while dragging his eyes on the glass.

When I was getting into Oscars I was looking around on Craigslist and saw a complete setup for sale. Lady had a pleco, oscar and two cons in a 46 gallon tank. Water looked clean but as we know nitrates are the problem.

Not knowing about tank size I would have considered buying the setup. But the O didn't look healthy. it was cloudy eyes that turned me off. Did my research and realized that this had to be water quality. 80 on nitrates - sounds like the same. Keep them below 20 with multiple water changes, keep him alone and you will see him heal I bet.
