Hey Guys,

Last night I found that my PH level was very low - 4 range - while I have a tank of baby Oscars.

I put in a PH buffer (powder) and woke up this morning to find the tank completely clouded.

Is this bad for the fish? What does this mean?

My gf is at home and if need be, I am going to ask her for an emergency WC if needed...

Please advise folks.

Gratzi

4!? What size tanks is this ? Whats your regular maintenance schedule ? Whats the tap waters PH? If its anything higher I would have her doing water changes.... Thats amazing. Now if the tap is more than a digit higher then slowly ramp the ph back up over a day and a half. PH buffers are not a good thing they mostly fool testing equipment ime. Best of luck to you your gf and the oscars .

What test kit are you using? If this is test strips, ditch it along with the "pH buffer" and get API liquid. What is the KH of your tank? Check the tapwater's pH and KH as well.

i would suspect the test kit and not your water. get a good test kit, make sure its not expired, and follow the directions.

Hey Guys - got a new PH kit - low, but not 4 range - rather it came out to a 6.4...

I don't understand - the Tap water is 7.2...

All I have in my 10 gallon is 3 baby oscars and a baby Jack Dempsey...

Regular stone gravel, a 20 gallon aquaclear, plastic plants, and two air stones...

What could be causing my low PH?

Ammonia

I will take a shot at this here as i just fixed a tank (not mine) that had a 4 ammonia but a ph of 4.9 with living fish inside

when your ph was at 4ish range (yes it is possible) your BB stops or goes dormant and your ammonia stays non-toxic... by buffering your ph up you made your ammonia deadly and at the same time killed your BB that is why you got cloudy water...

buff the ph of new clean water in a clean bucket close to the current ph and do a 3-4 gallon water change, today and tomorrow then start to buff the ph back up slowly while doing daily water changes.
