I have a 180 gallon containing:4 parrots;1 green terror;2 gold sevrums;2 tin flil babs; 1 firemouth; 1 jack dempsey. Half of the fish are around 6" while the others are smaller. Each time I complete a 30% water change, the water becomes cloudy for 3-4 days. However, I did a change a week ago and the water remained cloudy. I did a water check yesterday and the ammonia raised from almost 0 to 4. This is the first time I've had an ammonia reading this high. I did another water change and added enough Amquel to treat the entire tank. My ammonia reading is still 4 today and nitrite is almost 0. Nitrate is about 40. I've read ammonia spikes can be treated but the readings will still read high even if the ammonia level is low.
I'm filtering the aquarium with a w/d filter filled with scrubbies and two Rena XP4's filled with fiberfill and the foam that comes with the filters. I have room for about another 20 scrubbies in the w/d--should I get more? Stop the water changes?
