I just added 40 pounds of pool filter sand today to my 30gal. I rinsed the sand a few times etc and added it to the tank. Now, the water is added and the filter is running but the water is still (obviously) very cloudy (not sandy, cloudy). I know it is supposed to be, especially after just setting it up but my question is does it clear itself up via the filters running or do I need to be doing daily water changes to get it out? I haven't started the cycling yet, I wanted to get the majority of the water clear first:)

It will settle. You don't need to do water changes. Go ahead and get some ammonia in there and start cycling.

Also, do I have to be super careful every time I do stuff in my tank as to make sure I don't stir up the sand and get it all cloudy again? After a while does it just not get bothered as easily?

Unfortunately no. Unless your tank is dirty (from fish detritus).

Your best to clean as well as you can, including W/C's since WYSIWYG.

And be careful to much doesn't get in the filter as it will eat up the impeller or time.

In regards to my HOB filter, how can I tell what is a good adjustment for the height of my intake tube from the bottom? Obviously I don't want it to pick up the sand, but does it harm anything to have it too high? I'm still new to a lot of the details in fish keeping.....:D
