???
i've been cycling my new 40 for about a week now with a couple guppies and a sinciperca whiteheadi. all of a sudden today. the water started getting a lil cloudy. whats going on?? is my tank dirty or something? the water couldnt have gotten that dirty that fast.

I think your 40 is just going through a bacterial bloom, if that... nothing to worry about, it's harmless, and nothing you can do, Even if you change the water.. it will still be cloudy. Just wait and let it clear on it's own.

if you are doing a fish cycle then try 10% water changes daily to keep ammonia at a lower level initially. as twk says it is a bacterial bloom and it should pass but its not good for the health of your fish. im betting since you added the fish you've done zero water changes right?

dont ad anymore fish for about another week and when you do add maybe one or two max. but keep up those 10% dailys for about another 2 weeks

couldn't have said it better myself

im glad you agree old chap. nice to have the support of my piers!

"chocks away!"

:clap

just remember that if you are changing the water even 10% daily it will take your tank longer to cycle. Watch your fish closely if they do not have a stop in appetite or breath hard then they are fine but any sign of the two might mean you are having an ammonia spike. I would never use a fish I dont mind losing to cycle a tank.

well hopefully he doesnt die =) im gonna add about 2 more whiteheadi's

Be careful on not overfeeding, until the tank is cycled completely there is not enough good bacteria to handle the waste so you get the free floating bacterial bloom instead, it does not hurt to add a powerhead or airstones to increase surface movement and bump up the O2 levels at this point, bacterial blooms often cause low O2 levels that stress the fish.
