Just got home from work to find my ray tank cloudy . done water test all fine but a drop in Ph from 7 to 6 looked in filter to find my white pads merky brown the sand colour . Its very fine silca sand could this be altering my ph

ok so if its not the sand any idea what it could be, i thought maybe the sand is blocking the filter which is causing the PH to change

how long has the tank been set up? excess waste in the sand? how soft is your water? what's your DH and/or KH?

How long has the sand been in the tank? How thick is the layer of sand in the tank? A drop in pH without any change in ammonia could mean soft water. Have you ever tested the hardness out of the tap? My area has naturally soft water so I actually have to keep some crushed coral in one of my canister filters just to make it hard enough to buffer and maintain at around 6.8. Out of the tap my water is right on but without some sort of buffer the pH will drop like a stone.

when was your last waterchange??

sand been in tank 8 week but was well washed by me . the sand was 2 inch deep its now 1 inch as that was my thoughts never tested water hardness i know i should and will get a test kit . last water change saturday off 40 % .
