I don't think water changes are going to help at all. During the cycling process, you can change the water a little bit but he said that he just got the tank yesterday which means that the water is "new". Changing freshwater will just delay the process. Cycling helps the beneficial bacteria grow and establish in your tank and filter. The bacteria helps to break down organic matter which keeps the water clean. Usually some type of hardy cheap fish are used so that the poop and food can start and feed the bacteria. If you do water changes now, the bacteria will take longer to establish. You better put your fish in an established tank or they will die. You bought the tank yesterday which means it's not cycled. Cycling the tank is the most important thing to do when you first set-up your tank. I know it's exciting to get fish in the tank as soon as possible but you're going to have to wait at least 2 weeks for the tank to cycle otherwise you're going to start losing fish while the tank goes thru the process of cycling. Search cycle or cycling on this site and you will find all the info you need. Good luck, The Doctor.

Hopefully you still have the tank that they were in yesterday. Put them back in there and do a search on fishless cycle. It is the quickest and most humane way.
