well i went over to my friends house tonite and i looked into in his tank and i said holy s**t is that water cloudy. the inside of the glass was also very slimey. all of his water test come up fine. this cloudy water has been going on since a week after christmas or so. he got a lage castle and a medium size ship from petco for christmas and he washed it a could times before he put it into the water. after he put those into the water it started to get cloudy. so i looked at his power filter and it was over flowing so i had him put new filters in it and it still over flows. so i told him to take the black sponge what was in the filter and it did not do anything. so i had him take both medias and both black sponges out of the filter and it still over flows. his tank size is a 55 gallon and he got it from walmart and it also has a aqua tech 55 gallon filter for it. i think he needs to get a better power filter. please let me know what u think

What do you mean by overflows? Are you talking about a HOB powerfilter? Those are supposed to overflow..... I'm confused.

I'd say he definitely needs a better filter of some type. Those Aqua-Tech filters are generally regarded as garbage. I've used them before, and I think they're alright (not as bad as some people insist), but the ratings for them definitely aren't true. That 55 gallon filter would be pushing it for a 40 gallon, IMO. . .

Also, by overflow, I'm guessing you mean it's overflowing from the "overflow" port on the front, beside the cartridge instead of passing through the cartridge?
Either way, you killed his cycling bacteria by taking the black sponge out. That should have stayed in there, and should only ever be removed to rinse it in old tank water.

If he wants to go with a HOB power filter, I'd look at Aquaclears. They're supposed to be wonderful. Other than that, you can get cheap filters for a 55 gallon. Fluval, Eheim, and Rena all make small canisters cheap that would work well enough for a 55.

well first of all i did not kill anything because he also has a 80 gallon sponge filter in the tank. when i mean by over flowing is that the was if flowing out of places where it should not be coming out of

the water cloudiness could be an algae bloom, i have the same kind of tank and filter and it happened to me before, "algae fix" cleared it up.
