Just looking for info:

Every three months or so I rinse the internal filters on my 2 largest tanks, the filtration is the same on both, crappy internals that came with them and an added canister on each. I do this in tank water from the tank, give them a quick squeeze and replace them to prevent clogging. The canisters are rinsed every 6 months or so, but this is unrelated. This is accompanied by a 50% water change compared to the weekly 25% change. Normally the results are stunning the water is very polished and clean after an hour or so. The smaller of the two has done this but the larger tank has just got cloudier and cloudier since the change(Sunday). I've come home tonight and can barely see through the tank, I've done a 25% water change but nothing has changed. Water had been treated as normal and the change was carried out at the same time, internal and canister filters are identical.

Ideas?

If there is fish in the tank and it has a milky looking cloudiness to it that is a indication of an ammonia spike and bacterial bloom. You need to check the ammonia levels right away to protect any inhabitants. If the ammonia is high do a large water change 80% or so. And keep an eye on it with daily tests. If the water has a yellow or green tint to it then it is a algae bloom. Which is caused by to much light usually. -------------------------------some pics would help

Thanks for the reply, I've finished it now. I suspected a bacteria bloom but was not sure of why, nothing has been done differently than before. I got home today and could barely see through the tank width ways.

I got home last night and did a 1/3 water change, I got home tonight and everything is a lot worse so I've done a 50% change, If nothing has improved by the morning I'll do another 50%. It's not an algae problem it's got to be bloom, the strange thing is the fish is acting perfectly normal, eating fine etc. I've got pics will post them tomorrow. I can't find my ammonia tests I'll pick some more up in work tomorrow, never had this problem before

I had that same problem a while back... I did the exact same thing you did, and boom, bacteria bloom...It happens, nothing to worry about...Id slow down on the water changes though and let it cycle and give it a couple days, it wil clear up on its own

If the fish was not being himself then I'd be more concerned but it seems to be fine. I see what happens when I get home tonight.

is because of your ''N'' Cycle...if you rinse your canister filter...I advise you to not change the water in the same day, to incubate the bateria back to your canister filter, so the water will be keeping clear, another way..if it is still white, try to add some kind of bacteria things..that is available in the fish shops, to up the cycle process in your thank...and plants will help to fast up the cycle process...if the fish keep swiming and eating well..is just the problem of cycling the water...try..to wait for a while..the water...will be clear..

did you put milk in your tank? that could very well be the reason

I've not touched the canister, I run 2 filters, one internal and the canister. I never rinse them both at the same time. In fact the canister get rinsed every 6 months or so, it's only the internal that get done every couple of months so there is always a healthy colony at one time. I only rinse the pads in used tank water. The tank has been established for over 5 years.

Thanks for the post, the water is clearing now.

Pictures later
