Hello,
This morning when I went to check on my fish, my water was milky in one tank like it was going through a bacterial bloom. I don't know why this would happen because that tank is already cycled. Yesterday it was fine but today i can barely see through it. I didnt have time to get the water parameters before work so I I'll have to get them on here later but I was wondering if anyone had any insight on why that's happening. It has two small oscars in it and a few tinfoil barbs with a fluval 305 filter on it. Any help would be appreciated

Could it be from leftover food? Filter maybe been cleaned?

Could be leftover food. My brother had to feed them the night of because I was out of town maybe he dumped too much food in there. It seems like the filter would have taken care of that though

Hello; While the filter will pick up the uneaten food particles suspended in the water, the excess food will decay in the filter media. Add to that the fish will have had a big meal and will be producing additional waste material. This perhaps led to the cloudy water.
A bubbler will help prevent the possible bacterial bloom from causing stress to the fish from oxygen depletion. Water changes will help. May also help to rinse out the filter medium or replace it.

Just dont rinse bio media but rinsing out filter media will not harm bacteria enough to matter. It takes some time for the chlorine to kill it. I rinse mine all the time and only do the bio media if i have to.

Will rinsing out the filter cause me to lose the bacteria I need?

Hello; I have rinsed filter media many times without harm. I suspect there is a lot of the benefical bacteriaa (bb) in the tubes and other parts of the filter as well as in many surfaces of the tank. As stated by another member, if you have biological media do not rinse it . If you do a water change, many suggest rinsing the filter media in the old tank water to avoid killing off the bb.
You may be in a situation of need if in fact the tank was over fed.
