Sage Advisors,
I have a lovely long-term client who insists on putting ($%@@&) tilapia into the ecosystems we build for him. So it goes -golden rule, etc.- but here we are some years later and he's appreciating why I tell him to be careful with introductions as what goes in can't necessarily come out. He's a softy and wants them removed to the golf-course (rather than via spear to the kitchen).

Q: if I use clove oil to slow everybody down and minimize stress/injury (incl. to the non-tilapia koi, oscar & iridescent sharks etc), then is there an antidote such that I don't have to drain the system afterwards? Or is dilution the only solution, thus water-changes & time & waste?

Q2: does clove oil do anything to plants? Snails? Turtles? Other ecosystem constituents?
Q3: does the oil impact sponge and/or charcoal filtration? Will I need to discard/replace afterwards?
Q4: Ponds are ~12' x 7' by 2'deep. Dosage?

Thanks
Andrew

Waste of time. After dosing the clove oil the fish would have to be diluted in renewed water.

Hello; First I do not have an answer for the clove oil question. I do have a suggestion.
Back years ago during my graduate studies I took some limnology courses. There was a rig with a car battery and some electrical bits on the end of poles. I think it pulsed a high voltage into the water which would stun the fish.
I think fish and game has used a bigger rig on boats for larger and deeper bodies of water.
Best I can recall the stunned fish would float up to be counted and identified then they soon recovered and were released.

Thanks SKJ.,
I ran an electro-shocker in norther Saskatchewan & Manitoba to pay for University. A brilliant machine (even at that vintage) and you do recall (largely) correctly. Unfortunately they're a little unreliable for this sort of soft-work as they impact different sizes, morphologies & species differently; what would stun a Tilapia pup could break an I.Shark's back.

Problem with clove oil is even if you fo dilute it by doing water changes, it will still stick to surfaces as the water goes down...

So when you refill you are essentially adding some amount of it back in... thats why when knocking fish out with clove oil, its best to do it in a bucket, followed by a 2nd clean bucket with plain clean water for them to recover in with an air-stone if possible...

Actually, adding to what i said above, the amount you dose will also effect fish at different rates and similar to the electricity problem, the amount of time it takes to knock out smaller fish will be in theory much quicker than in larger fish...

You may also want to consider the damage it could do to the fish if they are out for too long, as most people try and keep the time they are out to less than 10-15min if possible...

I am more interested in the "50 eggs".

I would never advise to add clove oil to any main system. It is such a pain to get off anything. I used it to put down a catfish and I couldn’t even get the smell off after washing my hands with soap 3 times. It smells great but it’s very intrusive stuff to add to such a large set up.

The best option is to get a net big enough to stretch the ponds and follow up with electro fishing (with tools specially made for the purpose).
