I have a 6 year old tiger oscar that has recently developed serious swim bladder problems that arent getting better and his general health is suffering badly now with HITH and ulcers due to this issue.

I'd like to euthanase him and as far as I can tell, clove oil is a great anaesthetic and used in large enough doses will kill a fish painlessly after knocking it out.

Does anyone know the doseage amount that I would need for a 13" oscar in around 20 litres of water (the size of the container i'd use).

I'm really only interested in this option as its not brutal or messy and I have grown a good bond with this fish over the years so would like it to be a clean, painless and quick death.

Personally, Id start at 3 drops per cup of water. Then slowly add drops until he stops breathing.

The dosage to just put a SMALL fish under TEMPORARILY is one drop per 3 cups.

Hey Camshaft, thanks for the advice, I'll see about getting hold of some clove tomorrow and see how he's faring... if (I doubt) he is looking a bit better I will hold off.

throw him in a bag of water. throw in 3 shots of clorox bleach, quick painless. cheap.

Chop his head off with a big cleaver. Quick and painless.

If you miss or don't cut it all the way the fish will suffer severe pain.. This method should only be used if the person is extremely accurate.

Not quick and painless. It would burn the fish to death.

@OP: Just slowly add drops in till you can see that he has stopped breathing. If you want to make sure he's down, you could pour vodka after the clove oil. Its not easy having to put down a beloved pet.. I feel for ya. Good luck.

EDIT: I just looked back on the date. Its been over a month.. Did he make it or you put him down?

I diddnt put him down in the end... his swimming sorted itself out and even though he has very slowwen sides he appears much happier and is eating well.
The swelling isnt a blockage or intestinal as I have fed him a cricket \and that passed through (could visibly see parts of it) later that day with the swelling still there.

Anyways the information is still very valuable as I have had many fish over the last 20+ years and have had to put some down due to injury or ilness, at least now I have a painless way to do it instead of waiting for them to suffer & die on their own or brutally hacking their heads off
