Odd question here.

My roommate and I recently tried to make up some homemade clove oil because my roomie didn't wanna spend the money on the store bought stuff heh. We bought some dried clove and she made some oil according to an oil making book she apparently has. Camallanus turned up in one of my tanks and so I tried to use some of this stuff to euthanize affected fish. Well, it didn't mix with the water and the fish just seemed unhappy but not at all drifting off to sleep.. I tried shaking it up, no effect. I assume the clove oil I can purchase in the stores isn't like this stuff and mixes with water? Ultimately, I ended up freezing the fish, but I've heard this isn't as humane as possible. I just want to make sure Im not just doing something wrong before I go out and buy the store brand.

Why are you performing euthanasia on fish just because they are affected by camallanus worms? Have you tried levamisole hydrochloride or fenbendazole?

Ive tried Levamisol, Metridenazol (sp?), praziquantel, and I believe hydrochloride was in the api mixture I tried as well. Fenbendazole I cannot find easily, and getting my hands on a $50 jar of it + shipping didn't seem worth it, despite being the one thing that's supposed to work in all cases. I therefore euthanized them to prevent it spreading to any of my other tanks.

umm, probably because your "oil making method" isn't very effecient at extracting the right ingredients. Just because A+B=C, and you have A & B, doesn't mean you can make C a different way, and since you don't know the formula, it's going to be hard to get it the right way. At GMC clove oil is $5 a bottle, not too expensive.

you need to mix the clove oil with alcohol first...

I have been in the search of clove oil for about 6 months now.
Where do you guys buy this stuff?

The formula as you call it, for clove oil, is the same as any other oil, whether or not my roommate knows what she's doing is another matter. A bottle of the stuff about half the size of one of those mini bottles of liquor is $17.99 at the grocery store which is why she wanted to go this way. Im wondering if anyone can answer my original question though? Is the store bought stuff also really viscous or is it liquidy and soluable in water?

You can use Anbesol, or like the Mod said, eugenol, if you cant find clove oil.
