As of lately my 3" clown knife has been acting weird. It started right after I got my tank really clear (I had an algea bloom) He started hanging out at the very top of the tank, somtimes with the tip of his tail above the water. He also wasent eating very well, I would feed him beef heart and he would spit it out, he also ate a little brine shrimp. He ate better today but is still hanging at the top, I thought they were supposed to hide?

Is there something wrong with him?

How did you cure the algae?

I got rid of it with some algea chemical stuff. It had worked before on my 20 gallon tank and it did again. Could that be the reason he is feeling sick?

little guy like that, yeah the chemicals could be the problem. next time do water changes, try not to use chemicals if you can help it. if he is just not hiding dont worry about it, some knives are friendly.

I don't know for sure as I have never used an algacide. Most algae "cures" contain copper or ammonium, neither is good for fish and they are especially harmful to young and/or scaleless fish. I suggest doing a thorough gravel vac followed by a good water change, and you may even want to add carbon to your filter for a while.

The die off caused by the algicides can cause a spike in your ammonia levels in addition to decreased oxygen levels. Your knife is likely hanging out near teh surface due to teh higher dissolved oxygen levels it can find there.

I have to agree with guppy in that you should do some water changes and gravel vacuuming.

he is very fine now and very outgoing still. I actually did many water changes before using the algea stuff, and it didnt work so thats why I used it. The oxygen in the tank was fine all the other fish were pretty much at the botton except him. so yeah he and everyone else are fine.

thanks for all the help.

Clown Knives are my favorite fish! It's good to hear that your's is doing better.
