I want a clown knife fish and was wondering does a tank determine how big your fish gets?

well, yes because it will get to a certain size and die.
its not the way to treat a fish. make sure they have adequate room for an adult specimen or they will live a very unhappy life.

welcome to MFK by the way:P

+1

if you buy one small, a 55 will do for a while because they are slow growers, a 180 could probably house an adult. I don't know the size they would have to be to outgrow a 55

they would outgrow a 55 in about a year.

clown knifes can get over 3 ft, get at the very least a 180 6x2x2 or 150 i think it's 5x2x2

IMO even a 180 is small since they do grow 3' plus.

Clown Knives shouldn't be as common as they are, just like Pacus. I would say 6x3' footprint would be adequate, but they really belong in massive aquariums.

Ever seen a huge Clown knife swim in open water? Not in a home aquarium, because they never have space.. but it is awesome in a 2000g public aquarium, That's for sure.l
